Queen Elizabeth II inspecting members of the St John Ambulance Brigade
Queen Elizabeth II was the Sovereign Head of the Order of St John and took a great interest in its humanitarian work. A ‘Royal Review’ of the Brigade was one of the great events in which the Queen could meet and inspect the Brigade’s members, with many large-scale reviews taking place in Hyde Park, where thousands of uniformed volunteers lined up for royal inspection.
