Nicosia
This map show the sixteenth-century Venetian Walls of Nicosia. Following the Great Siege of Malta in 1565, many islands in the Mediterranean enhanced their fortifications in response to the threat from the Ottoman Empire. The ruling Venetian Republic brought in Italian military engineers to build the substantial star fort. The Pedious River was even diverted to fill the surrounding moat.
