Famagusta
While there had been some form of fortification in the city of Famagusta since the fourteenth century, it was in the following two centuries that the Venetian Republic enhanced and rebuilt the fortifications which would go on to withstand an eleven-month siege of the Ottoman Empire, before eventually capitulating in 1571.
