Bailiff Grand Cross
The details of the uniform have helped us identify the subject of this painting as a Bailiff Grand Cross. Although we do not know who he is, he presumably wanted to show how clever he was to viewers as the bookshelf behind him displays classical Latin literature by Horace, Cicero and Virgil.
