"Burning of S.S. "Sardinia" November, 1908"

Letters regarding the assistance given by members of the Maltese St John Ambulance Association (SJAA) to passengers and crew of the SS Sardinia, a passenger-cargo ship that caught fire off the coast of Malta on 25 November 1908. The letters include accounts of the incident, statistics on the number of cases treated, and information about a situation where an individual with an infectious disease was saved - with risk to their own lives - by Lieutenant W.R. Gatt and two Gunners of the Royal Malta Artillery, and requests for those individuals to be recognised for their service. Also included is a newspaper cutting from The Daily Malta Chronicle which provides an account of the SS Sardinia’s incident.

Correspondents include E.M. Merewether (Lieutenant Governor and Chief Secretary to Government), Lieutenant W.R. Gatt (Honorary Secretary of the SJAA Malta Centre), Sir Herbert Charles Perrott, and C. Tagliaferro (Assistant Honorary Secretary of the SJAA Malta Centre).
