G. Leventis Gallery tells the story of the birth of the Saviour and transports the visitor to the intricate story that surrounds Christ’s first night on earth.
The exhibition opens on December 5th, 2013 at 10 am and will be on display until March 2nd, 2015. 17 Museums and private collections have lent us unique paintings that trace the depiction of the Nativity from the Byzantine tradition and western Mediaeval art to the 17th century, but also in the aftermath of the Baroque period into Modernism. This exhibition is not only interesting for the selection of works that it presents, but for the fact that it is possibly the first time that a museum has chosen to approach the theme in such a manner.
The exhibition invites the visitor to explore one of the most loved stories throughout the ages, in a new light. In an exciting juxtaposition of image and text, the Nativity emerges not as a single narrative but as an exciting and multifaceted story.
