The St John Ambulance Brigade was originally established with men and women separated by gender, with men forming Ambulance Divisions and women forming Nursing Divisions. They met and trained separately, but public duties provided an opportunity for the Divisions to join forces and utilise their shared skills in the provision of first aid and care for the public.
