St John Ambulance Brigade members stretcher-carrying an injured British soldier off a ship at Tilbury Docks

The St John Ambulance Brigade's efforts on the homefront aided civilians and also British soldiers. Brigade volunteers acted as stretcher-bearers and welfare officers to receive and transport injured British soldiers returning from abroad at ports and railways across England, and their efforts helped to provide vital care and medical attention to soldiers returning home from the horrors of war.
