In 1978, St John Ambulance Wiltshire held a major disaster exercise which involved two cars and a passenger train in a collision on a railway level crossing. The exercise was staged at British Rail Engineering Limited works in Swindon, involving over 100 ‘casualties’ and ‘wrecked’ train carriages. Exercises are invaluable for training and cooperation and prepare volunteers for major disasters.
