The Joint War Organisation was re-established in 1939, to coordinate the efforts of the Order of St John and the British Red Cross. Volunteers worked in hospitals, supporting medical teams and treating the injured. Voluntary Aid Detachments (VADs) were also re-established at the start of the war and over 6,000 nursing members served abroad with the armed forces, working in military hospitals.
