Sir John Furley
In 1877, John Furley, along with Sir Edmund Lechmere and Colonel Francis Duncan, co-founded the St John Ambulance Association. Furley was appointed the Association’s Director of Stores, and it was in this role that he developed the original first aid kit (the ambulance hamper) in 1879, and stretchers for transporting injured persons.
