4 Tarì of Grand Master Jean de la Valette
This coin has been punched with the countermarks of four Grand Masters. Countermarks were used to prolong the life of coins, reducing the need and expense of reissuing currency at the outset of the reign of a new Grand Master. The countermarks were authorised by decree, confirming that the mark signified the coin continued to be legal tender.
