Malta Siege ingot

On 11 June 1798 the Knights of Malta surrendered to the invading forces of Napoleon Bonaparte. Troops seized the Order’s silver and sold much of it in Alexandria and Cairo, but some of the booty was melted down and cast into ingots for use as currency during a coin shortage that followed the invasion. Only seven silver Siege ingots remain from this era, two in the Museum’s collections.
