Antiochene copper of Tancred

The obverse of this coin depicts Tancred, ruler of the Principality of Antioch, one of the four crusader states. This coin has generated much debate, with some interpreting the Christian prince’s headdress to be headwear familiar to his subjects - a turban - and others believing it is a halo, the imagery derived from a Byzantine coin depicting the soldier-saint Theobald.
