The city of Antioch, situated on the banks of the Orontes River in modern day Turkey, was captured in 1098 during the First Crusade. Bohemond of Taranto, who led the siege against the city, named himself prince of Antioch and the city became the centre of a new crusader state: the principality of Antioch.
