Interior of Crypt with coffins
For much of the 18th and 19th centuries, the crypt of the Priory Church of the Order of St John would have looked like the unidentified crypt in this engraving – a place of burial, stacked high with coffins. In the late 19th century the crypt was cleared as part of a programme of reinternment in cemeteries outside of London, in an effort to improve hygiene in the city.
