The Urban Club
In the nineteenth century the Urban Club, a group of learned gentlemen with a particular interest in Shakespeare, gathered at The Old Jerusalem Tavern at St John’s Gate for regular meetings. They would sing, drink from a loving cup and feast, and learn of literature, history and science. This group portrait includes the likeness of Charles Dickens, who was rumoured to have been a member.
