The Old Jerusalem Tavern advertisement
The competition between the many taverns in Clerkenwell prompted publican Samuel Wickens to use the history of St John’s Gate as a unique selling point to draw in the punters. Its name, The Old Jerusalem Tavern, was a direct reference to the Order of St John’s historic links to the Holy Land. A local landmark, Wickens also used the image of the Gate prominently on his advertisements.
