Model of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem
Models like these were made as souvenirs to be sold to pilgrims and tourists visiting the Holy Land. Craftsmen in Bethlehem and Jerusalem used local materials to create highly decorative, but also architecturally accurate, representations of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Each model was accompanied by a parchment scroll with a key to the different parts of the building and their significance.
