While the Knights of St John took a vow of poverty, the very fine quality of this personalised Chinese porcelain dish demonstrates that some lived in splendour. The coat of arms in the centre of the dish include an eight pointed cross – an emblem associated with the Order of St John – indicating this was commissioned by and belonged to a Knight.
