Life Saving Medal of the Order of St John in silver awarded to Cecil Courtenay Dickinson
On 1 September 1923 an earthquake struck Japan, causing devastation and destruction in Tokyo and Yokohama. At the time it was reported to be the worst natural disaster to have struck the region. Chief Officer Dickinson was captaining a P&O vessel. He and his crew were instrumental in saving the lives of the passengers of their vessels, and many inhabitants of Yokohama.
