St John the Baptist

According to tradition the site of the Order’s first hospital, founded in eleventh-century Jerusalem, was where an angel announced the conception of St John the Baptist, who was adopted as the Order’s patron saint. Representations of the Baptist, such as this fine sculpture, could be found in the Order's churches and chapels across Europe.
