Grand Master Cardinal Hugues Loubenx de Verdala
Cardinal Hugues Loubenx de Verdala was the 52nd Grand Master of the Order of St John, between 1581 and 1595. The controversial matter of a Grand Master wearing the eight pointed cross of the Order on his Cardinal's mantle first occurred under Verdala. It was resolved when Giacomo Bosio, the Order's agent, went to Rome with a portrait of Cardinal d'Aubusson wearing the cross over his red mantle, and Verdala was allowed to continue wearing the cross.
