Grand Master Jean de la Valette
A slightly unusual shape, this painting was likely adapted from a medal or a coin, hence the oval shape and the fact the portrait of Valette is in profile. Many portrait medals were struck to commemorate his success in the Great Siege of Malta in 1565, and the profiles, even down to the beard, are quite similar.
