Knight of St John
This knight is wearing eighteenth-century dress. Knights in this period were allowed to dress according to the latest fashions, so many abandoned the traditional armour or black mantles previously worn in portraits. The only rule that was maintained was that signs of their membership to the Order were clearly displayed, hence the eight-pointed cross at the bottom of the canvas.
