Grand Master Hugues Loubenx de Verdala

Verdala was Grand Master of the Order at a time when there was internal conflict. In 1587 the knights in Malta rebelled against his rule. Verdala travelled to Rome to seek the support of Pope Sixtus V, who made him a Cardinal in the hope this would unite the knights in support for him. This portrait medal commemorates this honour.
