Falconry of the Grand Master
This artwork shows a corner of the Buskett Gardens, or Boschetto, in Malta. The area was developed by the Knights of Malta as a hunting reserve, planted with trees to encourage a proliferation of fauna to hunt on visits to the Grand Master’s summer palace nearby. A falconry would have housed peregrine falcons, prized hunting birds native to Malta, captured and trained by the knights.
