Districts

The establishment of St John Ambulance Brigade Districts was announced in the Annual Report of 30 September 1894 (published in 1895) with the statement, “the Brigade for facilities of reference and for administrative purposes was now divided into five Districts”. The original five districts were: No I (Metropolitan); No II (Southern & Western); No III (Central & Eastern); No IV (North Western); No V (North Eastern). Originally, the districts were described in Roman numerals but this was not practicable for shoulder title badges and gradually changed to Arabic numerals; similarly, the names of Districts changed over time to reflect different geographical areas and terms. Prior to Districts, from 1889 to 1894, the Brigade was divided into Metropolitan Corps and Provincial Corps.

This sub-series contains records created and kept by the Brigade Districts, and currently comprised records relating to the No. I District, No. II District, No. III (Eastern) District, No. VI District, and No. VIII District.
