Service Medal of the Order
The Service Medal (originally known as the Long Service Medal) was first awarded in 1898 for conspicuous service to the Order and its departments, including members of the St John Ambulance Brigade who served for 15 consecutive and efficient years. In the 1990s, the length of service for St John Ambulance members receiving the award was lowered to 12 years, and in the 2000s it was lowered again to 10 years. For each additional 5 years of consecutive and efficient service, Brigade members were entitled to additional 'Bars'.
