The allocation of different areas of the organisation's accounts changed over time. Early accounts tend to cover all areas of the organisation. In 1894 the accounts of three areas of the SJAA (the Central Fund, Stores Department and Invalid Transport) were consolidated into one set of books under the heading of 'Ambulance Department'. Despite covering different activities of the Order, these financial records are catalogued in the Order of St John fonds to reflect their arrangement of the annual reports, also catalogued in this fonds.

This series is incomplete; there are no financial accounts for the years 1882-1884, 1908 and 1913. Records for some years contain only one type of account or only cover one area of the Order's activities, while other years are complete and cover additional areas. For example, files for years 1925-1929 contain additional Sunday Cinemograph Entertainments Accounts. Please consult individual file descriptions for further information.

Please note that this series is not complete, and has only been catalogued up to 1939.
